Historical Society Program on the Amish Thursday

Photographer William Lucas will be giving a presentation entitled “Visiting the Amish... history, religion, roles, journeys, families, and friendships” on Thursday.

MAYVILLE – The Chautauqua Town Historical Society’s first meeting this season will feature a program by award-winning photographer William Lucas: “Visiting the Amish… history, religion, roles, journeys, families, and friendships.”

William Lucas has traveled with the Amish, visiting communities throughout the U.S. and Canada over the last 40 years, and has served them as a driver. He will share slides, photos and anecdotes, sharing some of his experience, travel adventures, and understanding of Amish life.

The Amish could easily be viewed as a homogeneous group (given their similar dress and transport by horse and buggy); however, “a closer connection allows for a different perspective on their Christian beliefs, life skills, family life, and humor.”

As the friendly “English” driver with the 15-passenger white van and white trailer to match, he has become known to nearly all the 1,500 Amish residing in Chautauqua County.

The meeting will be Thursday, May 22 at 7 p.m. in the meeting room of the Town of Chautauqua Building, 2 Academy St, Mayville. Chautauqua Town Historical Society monthly programs are free and open to the public. All those who are interested are encouraged to attend.

Starting at $3.50/week.
