Council agenda features end to business loan program

The city of Dunkirk is set to formally end its Small Business Loan program.

A resolution is on today’s Common Council agenda to move $82,808 in federal Community Development Block Grant funding out of the program. “This resolution simply reprograms funds from the Small Business Loan program back to CDBG project funding,” it states.

The Dunkirk Local Development Corporation administers the business loan program funds, but “the DLDC has found that in the best interest of the DLDC it will abstain from such activities.”

The resolution states that $71,889 of the funding will be reallocated immediately, and the rest “will be reprogrammed at the completion of those loans in February 2026.”

City officials are currently focusing their business assistance efforts on a small business fund set up through Dunkirk’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative, which is funded by the state government.

Also, today’s agenda also makes clear that the city won’t be giving up the portion of Deer Street next to Save-a-Lot Plaza immediately.

A resolution seeks to refer the matter to the city Planning Board. That board will conduct a public hearing before approving the discontinuation of the street. This is in accordance with city law, the resolution states.

The Common Council already held its own public hearing on the matter. No one spoke.

The rest of the agenda consists mostly of the typical summertime fare: Approving loudspeakers, use of city parks and public events.

Notably, the Fredonia Early Childhood Center seeks to waive fees for its end-of-year picnic June 25. Council members have expressed reluctance in recent meetings to waive fees this summer for use of city property, with Dunkirk facing serious financial difficulties.

Starting at $3.50/week.
