Woods Walk set for June 21

Pictured is a previous Woods Walk.
There will be a Woods Walk on Saturday, June 21, at 4384 Brainard Rd., Kennedy.
Registration will take place from 9-9:30 a.m.
This will be an opportunity to participate in a “very variable woods walk” in the words of long-time owner and host, Dennis Wilson, a retired professional forester (33 years NYSDEC).
Participants will see a 65-acre managed (25 years) property featuring a 2 acre old growth forest, primarily hemlock but also white pine (over 300 years old) and hardwoods.
The last sawtimber harvest was in 2010. The white ash “pre-salvage” was in 2013. There is ongoing TSI and fuelwood harvests. In addition, there are 80 plus year old plantations of larch and white pine; a 4 acre man made pond; and an Osprey nest with the possibility of observing the parents feeding their young at this time of year.
A demonstration of an innovative “semipermanent” boundary line and sign attachment method will also take place.
This has variable terrain – a level section with unimproved, unmowed trails and a steep section of old growth with little undergrowth. The reasonably fit 78 year old owner is able to navigate the property.
The program will proceed rain or shine unless there is a severe weather warning issued. Please dress for the weather. There is no fee and the event is open to the general public.
