DUNKIRK — A heavy cloud of smoke filled the air along Talcott Street shortly before noon, Friday, as the Dunkirk Fire Department responded to a garage fire.
The smoke was emanating from a garage located behind the residence at 117 Lord St. The garage was detached from the residence, which did not appear to be impacted by the flames. Neighbors looked on as Dunkirk firefighters climbed a ladder with a chainsaw to open the ceiling of the structure and allow for water to be poured from above.
The smell of smoke could be detected from several blocks away. At several points, the smoke was so heavy it obstructed the view of the residence from onlookers standing across the street.
Alstar EMS was on scene, as well as Dunkirk police, but it did not appear that anyone was inside the structure or in need of serious medical attention.
Firefighters used multiple hose lines and tools to bring the fire under control. The city of Dunkirk was assisted by the Fredonia Fire Department, Alstar EMS, city of Dunkirk Police and City Code Enforcement. There were no injuries. city and Chautauqua County Fire Investigators are investigating the cause.
