MAYVILLE – Diners don’t have to guess when Tulip’s Brunch House is open.

Co-owners Travis and Tawn Bensink said the restaurant is open every day from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

“We found that if you have to guess when you’re open, guests tend to not come in,” Travis said. “But if they know that you’re going to be open every day for them, they tend to show up.”

Tawn agreed.

“And they have showed up,” she said about the 14 police officers coming in bright and early one recent morning.

“We do all day – breakfast and lunch. If you want a cheeseburger at 7 a.m. or you wants eggs and toast at 2:30 p.m., we do it all day,” Tawn added.

Since June 21, the restaurant, located 186 S. Erie St., has been open, and on Oct. 20, a grand opening ceremony is set for 3:30 p.m.

From creating the menu to listening to guests giving suggestions, Travis loves everything about owning a restaurant.

“We have our family, and friends working for us. Our community works with us, Travis said. “Everybody you see here is a neighbor, or a family member. So I like the ability to spend time with those people and share it with them.”

Front of House Manager Natalie Sturges said the staff is encouraged to get creative with the menus.

“They collectively come up with the recipes together, and then our chefs, they also make tweets and suggestions for the menus,” Sturges said.

Travis said that Tulip’s was opened because he and his staff believe that brunch is more than just a meal.

“It’s a feeling,” Travis said in a written statement. “It’s comfort. It’s connection. It’s community. Opening Tulip’s wasn’t about creating just another restaurant. It was about creating a space that brings people together.”

Travis said he is grateful to everyone who helped bring his dream to life because in 2023, the Bensink family’s family home on Centralia-Hartfield road was destroyed by fire. In the fire, the family’s two dogs and two of four cats passed away.

In a gesture to help preserve a name, Travis and Tawn decided to name the restaurant Tulip’s in memory of their beloved English Bulldog that died in the fire.

“We had a house fire two years ago, and so our community here really supported us through that, but our English Bulldog passed away in the house fire, and her name was Tulip. We had a few pets pass away, but the bulldog is definitely very missed,” Tawn said.

In the restroom, diners can see pictures hanging of the restaurant’s namesake.

Travis and Tawn have been formulating plans for the last five years to open a restaurant. But because they live in the community, they wanted to give back to the community.

And opening a restaurant was a way to show their appreciation and give back to the community.

“It was just a matter of timing in finding the right building. And this opportunity came available, and this building is perfect for our concept,” Tawn said.

Travis added the restaurant was born out of love for two things – great food and the Mayville community.

“We wanted to create a place where creativity and community could meet – where every dish is homemade, but with a little twist that makes it feel personal. Every plate tells a story,” Travis said.

The restaurant boasts great views of Chautauqua Lake, and not far away there is a public dock for use during the warmer months, and snowmobile trails for use during the colder months, so it can be a year-round place of gathering.

“We had a lot of people calling on their boat. They can park their boat and come up and short walk from the trail, and really, you can almost access us from a variety of ways,” Tawn said

Tawn noted that when the restaurant closes, it is available starting at 3:30 p.m. for private events. And the restaurant, Tawn added, also there is a takeout menu, and soon there will be mobile ordering.
