SUNY mourns passing of School of Music dean
Those connected to the State University of New York at Fredonia are in mourning. On Wednesday, the School of Music shared with “heavy hearts and deep sadness” the news of the passing of its Dean, Dr. David Stringham.
According to the post, “Stringham joined SUNY Fredonia in May 2023 as the Dean of the School of Music. He was chosen for his exceptional communication skills, leadership in organizational change, and deep commitment to expanding student access and success through the excellent learning opportunities provided by the School of Music. Working collaboratively with colleagues across campus and in the community, he embraced every opportunity to build on Fredonia’s rich legacy in music and music education.
“Dean Stringham worked tirelessly to strengthen enrollment. He actively cultivated partnerships with prestigious institutions, and explored new recruitment pathways with school districts across New York, expanding opportunities for students to benefit from Fredonia’s programs.
“He spent most Fridays visiting with alumni, donors, and music educators (often bringing coffee and doughnuts from a local bakery to share), and was inspired by the work being done in the classrooms he visited. His fundraising and advocacy efforts focused on building close relationships with donors, who have noted his unique ability to articulate the needs of the School of Music with clarity and passion. The approximately $1.5 million in new gifts since 2023 is a testament to his ability to inspire support for the students and programs he so passionately served. These transformative outcomes of his leadership underscore his commitment, insight, and lasting impact on the university community – a remarkable legacy.
“Even as we mourn this tremendous loss, we can also find some comfort in the wonderful memories that he left us, and the countless good things that he did to help others achieve their dreams.
“Dean Stringham brought genuine kindness and care to Mason Hall and had a deep desire to build connections with and open doors to anyone and everyone who wanted to find their place here. He will be greatly missed.
“We extend our sincere condolences to his family.”
As an expression of sorrow and honor to Stringham, the SUNY Fredonia flag will be flown at half-staff for one week from Nov. 11 to 18.
