Union reacts to SUNY Morrisville shooting

The president of United University Professions reacted Tuesday to a shooting that took place Monday afternoon at the State University of New York campus at Morrisville. The incident occurred in a dormitory and involved an individual who was not a student.

That person was transported to a Syracuse hospital after being shot in the nectk.

“We are shocked and distressed by news of the shooting which took place on campus Monday afternoon as students attended classes and our members worked to provide them with a world-class education,” said Frederick E. Kowal, union president.

“Sadly, no community is exempt from senseless violence such as this. To meet their mission to transform lives, our colleges must be safe places for students to learn and for our members to work.

“There is no place for gun violence in America, especially on college and university campuses where students live and study and where our members work. As the nation’s largest higher education union, we abhor gun violence and we will do all we can to speak out against it and advocate for necessary change to make our campuses, our communities and our country safer.”
