WESTFIELD – After a little more than six months on the job, the leader of the Westfield Police Department is moving on.

On Friday, Police Chief Gregory J. Wozneak posted on Facebook that he is stepping down.

“After careful consideration, I have submitted my resignation as Chief of Police for the Village of Westfield, effective January 23, 2026,” he wrote.

He continued, “Serving this community over the past six months has been an honor, and I am grateful for the trust that has been placed in me. During my tenure, I have been dedicated to strengthening the department’s operations and supporting our officers in their work. Together, we successfully implemented a new digital reporting system, introduced updated patrol uniforms, obtained new patrol vehicles to have a more reliable fleet, and began installing surveillance cameras in the downtown district to enhance public safety. Additionally, we began the process of revamping the evidence system to improve organization, accountability, and long-term efficiency.

“These accomplishments were possible because of the support of the Mayor, Village Board and the commitment of the members of the department. It has been a privilege to work alongside individuals who care deeply about the safety and wellbeing of our residents.”

“Although this decision was difficult, I believe it is the right step for both myself and my family. I remain committed to ensuring a smooth transition and will assist in any way necessary during this period.”

Wozneak retired from the Jamestown Police Department after 21 years of service. Starting as a patrolman, he advanced through the ranks, holding positions as police sergeant, squad sergeant, lieutenant, and platoon lieutenant. His final role at JPD was detective lieutenant and investigative section commander.

Wozneak has a strong background in training and leadership. He served as a SWAT Team member, Entry Team Leader, and later as SWAT Team Commander. More recently, his focus within the investigative division has been on refining investigative interviewing techniques. He is also an adjunct professor of Criminal Justice at the State University at Fredonia.

Wozneak’s training includes First Line Police Supervision, Field Training Officer, ALERRT Active Shooter Response Instructor, Drug Task Force Commander/Supervisor, Reid Interview and Interrogation Advanced Course, Hostage Rescue Tactics, all necessary ICS courses, Reality Based Training and Instructor, Homicide Investigation Seminar, SWAT Team Command and Leadership, and Certified Hostage/Crisis Negotiator certifications. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from SUNY Brockport.
