The theme for January is Practicing Resistance. On Sunday, the service will include guest speaker Sheila Starkey Hahn who will reflect on practicing resistance in today’s challenging world.

Drawing on nearly three decades of experience representing asylum seekers, families, and other immigrants, she will share how daily acts of compassion, advocacy, and solidarity serve as forms of resistance against systems of cruelty. This talk explores the courage it takes to persist, the importance of community, and the quiet victories that sustain hope and justice.

Hahn has been practicing immigration law for over 25 years. She is a Buffalo native and returned to upstate New York with her husband and two sons after many years in Washington, DC, and Memphis, Tenn. She has a nationwide immigration practice focusing on employment-based immigration and the pro bono representation of asylum applicants from Central America. Sheila is the Chair of the National Client Resources Committee of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) and the past Chair of the AILA National Pro Bono Committee. She has traveled to Artesia, New Mexico, and Dilley, Texas, to provide pro bono representation to detained Central American asylum seekers. Sheila is the recipient of the 2018 Michael Maggio Pro Bono Award for her efforts at the Southern border and was named 2022 Lawyer of the Year for Immigration Law in Western New York by Best Lawyers and US News and World Report.
