State awaits info on Sheridan Bay Park

SHERIDAN — New town Supervisor Stephen Roach recently attended the pre-construction meeting for Phase II of renovations to the Sheridan Bay Park campground. Roach noted the meeting was “well-attended” by the contractors and other interested parties. He added, “I thought everything went well.”

Although the Town and the contractors are all on the same page for the upgrades, including a new bathhouse and a backflow system at Sheridan Bay Park, there are still several hoops that all parties need to jump through in order to satisfy the state of New York.

The project is supported by grant funding from the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, with existing reserve funds set to cover the remaining costs. Roach stated that roughly “10-12 additional items” were required by the State before the project proceeds, including a revised State Environmental Quality Review.

3 Pete’s Masonry is the general contractor at a cost of $411,878. Electrical work is being handled by Becc Electric in the amount of $125,428. Plumbing will be done by Chautauqua Mechanical for $97,668. The mechanical work from Vastola Heating and Cooling will cost $23,317.38. Each contractor is now required to provide bid packets, proof of workman’s compensation, proof of certification with the state, and a copy of contracts with the Town of Sheridan, along with several other requirements.

The demolition of the existing bathhouse at the park was recently completed, and the area was cleaned up and re-graded to prepare for the new structure to be built.

Also of note, Roach said there is “a hang-up” with the Host Community Agreement between the Town of Sheridan and RIC Energy pertaining to the Sheridan II Solar Project. Town Attorney Jeff Passafaro advised the Town to amend the language of the agreement, as well as the Decommissioning Plan, as submitted.

The Sheridan II Solar project is a 3-megawatt solar energy system to be located at 2979 Middle Road. The project abides by the Town’s solar energy laws and setback guidelines. The Town Board is acting as Lead Agency for the project.

During the month of December, the Sheridan Justice Court disposed of 102 vehicle and traffic law cases, two penal law cases, and one Environmental Conservation law case, with a total of $8,207 collected and turned over for distribution. The Town Clerk’s Office collected $350.25 in December.

Also in the month of December, the Code Enforcement Office issued six permits, nine certificates of occupancy, and six certificates of compliance. Additionally, 16 inspections on construction, one public safety inspection, and two investigations of complaints were held, with one notice of violation issued. A total of $705 was collected in fees.

The Town also finalized a series of appointments and salaries for 2026 at its recent organizational meeting. In 2026, Roach will receive a salary of $9,085 as Supervisor. Members of the Town Board — Erica Gentry, Craig Sutton, Joe White and Colleen Yerico — will receive salaries of $3,975. Gentry was appointed as Deputy Supervisor.

Rebecca Schafer receives $31,200 as Town Clerk, plus $2,600 as Tax Collector, $575 for records management, and $300 as registrar. Dana Mleczko will serve as Deputy Town Clerk and Deputy Tax Collector. Mellody Lemiszko will serve as Court Clerk at a salary of $44,963. Thomas Mleczko earns a salary of $16,735 as Assessor.

Highway Superintendent Jeff Feinen earns $62,400 as Highway Superintendent. John Magierski earns $29.15 per hour as Deputy Highway Superintendent. Cole Szumigala, Daniel Dale, Mitchell Magierski, and Jacob Purol will serve as Highway Department employees at a rate of $22.52 per hour.

Town Attorney Jeff Passafaro receives $190 per hour for general counsel and $210 per hour for special districts, litigation, and tax work. Holly Pilarski receives $25 per hour as a cleaner. Rick Cooper receives $4,000 as Sheridan Bay Park Caretaker. Nicole Welka is the town’s Dog Control Officer at a salary of $2,500.

Romaine Hohenstein, Henry Hoisington and Paul DeMarco will serve as the Board of Assessment Review. Justice Jonathan Szumigala will serve as the lone Town Justice following the elimination of a second Justice position.

Paul Wallenhorst was reappointed to the Planning & Zoning Board for a five-year term. Other members of the Planning & Zoning Board are Brian Aldrich, Tom Hawk, Steve Muck, and John Yerico (Secretary).

The next regular meeting of the Sheridan Town Board is Wednesday, Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. at the Sheridan Community Center.

Starting at $3.50/week.
