CVCS to perform ‘High School Musical’ this weekend
High School Musical” will be performed at Cassadaga Valley Friday night, Saturday night and Sunday afternoon.
High School Musical, On Stage will be presented by the Cassadaga Valley Drama Club.
Performances will be held Friday, March 27, at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, March 28, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, March 29, at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 adults and $8 students and seniors and are available at cvcougars.seatyourself.biz
The stage version of the show is based on Disney’s High School Musical film from 2006. In the story, East High Wildcats basketball team captain Troy Bolton and gifted academic “brainiac” Gabriella Montez meet accidentally by being volunteered for karaoke at a New Year’s Eve kids party at a ski lodge where their families are spending the holidays. When Gabriella enrolls at Troy’s high school because her mom was transferred for a job, they meet up again but cannot pursue their passion for singing because of the established social cliques at the school.
Sharpay and Ryan Evans, fraternal twins, assume they will take the lead roles in the school’s musical production of “Juliet and Romeo,” but the conflict occurs when Troy and Gabriella decide to audition, and Sharpay tries to sabotage their chances. Troy and Gabriella eventually gain support from their friends, winning the roles and inspiring the school to embrace diversity and to recognize that it takes all of them to succeed.
Cassadaga Valley’s production of High School Musical, On Stage is directed by a team of three teachers at the school. Nicole Zenns is the stage director, orchestra conductor and costume designer; Reggie Cole is in charge of set building and production, and John Cole Jr. is the vocal director and financial manager. The production has 48 students and one faculty member on stage; 11 students in the stage crew, and four students in the orchestra, which is utilizing Sinfonia software, keyboard, bassoon and bari sax.
The school’s varsity cheerleading squad is involved with the show this year as well, under the direction of alumnae Stephanie Briggs and Peggy Heath.
“It’s interesting to see how the show goes together,” said Heath. “I’ve never known all that goes on behind the scenes, and it is a lot!”
Zenns said there are a high number of seniors involved in the productions.
“It’s been such a pleasure to work with these experienced kids and see how they have bloomed through years of being involved in the musical,” she said. “There are also a lot of middle school students involved as well, which is something that I think we do really well. If students get involved early, they almost always stay with musicals throughout their high school career.”
