City announces Memorial Day event schedule
The annual Memorial Day Services and Parade will be on Monday, May 25 at Memorial Park on Lake Shore Drive West in Dunkirk. Services will begin promptly at 10 a.m. The parade will follow at approximately 11.
Memorial Day Services will be conducted by the participating organizations of the Dunkirk Joint Veterans Council. Jack Sievert, Dunkirk Joint Veterans Council commander is coordinating the Services with John D’Agostino, Master-of-Ceremonies and editor of the OBSERVER and The Post-Journal.
The DJVC has been proudly hosting the Memorial Day Services since 1966, making 2026 as its 60th year of honoring veterans who made the supreme sacrifice for us, laying down their lives while serving in the Armed Forces.
The Formation of the D.J.V.C. was established in 1966 in Dunkirk, by the Chairman Alvin N. Kaymore and Founding Fathers, Michael Gregoreski, Leonard Mazany, Anthony Galardo, Harry Gould, Chester Tarnowski, Edward Cybulski, Roger Szalkowski, Harry J. Graminski, and Dale Campbell. The D.J.V.C. accords Military Honors to all Deceased Veterans in the Local area. Since 1966, more than 1,000 services were accorded by the D.J.V.C. honoring our deceased veterans.
The event’s grand marshal is Michael D. Edwards, Vietnam Veteran Purple Heart.
The Memorial Day Parade will begin at approximately 11 directly following the Memorial Day Service. The Parade Route is as follows: proceed East on Lake Shore Drive West to Central Ave. The parade will turn right onto Central Avenue and proceed South to Fifth Street. The parade turns East onto Fifth Street and disbands at Washington Park.
The Parade is being hosted by the City of Dunkirk under the direction of Mr. Scott Mekus (716) 366-9886 and Edward “EJ” Hayes, Planning & Development Director (716) 366-9876.
The public is invited to attend and the D.J.V.C. urges the public to fly the flag this Memorial Day.
The Dunkirk Joint Veterans Council salutes all our veterans and remembers those who sacrificed for our freedom.
