Historical Society presentation on Amish Thursday
MAYVILLE – William A. Lucas will present “Traveling with the Amish: Past and Present” at the Chautauqua Town Historical Society’s Monthly Meeting, Thursday, May 21 at 7 p.m. in the Veteran’s Memorial Meeting Room, the Chautauqua Town Hall, 2 Academy Street, Mayville.
William Lucas, a member of the Chautauqua Town Historical Society, has traveled extensively with the Amish from a number of communities in several different states. From his 40+ years of driving the Amish on their trips to many states, he has gained first hand insights regarding the daily aspects that shape their lives.
Lucas is an award-winning photographer (PhotoGather), who has documented and exhibited photos that chronicle Amish lives within the changing modern society. He asks “How do the Amish adapt, and why do the modern ‘English’ (as they call the non-Amish) look back on the past and reflect on how it compares with their own way of life?” These questions and others are the subject of his illustrated talk and the discussion following.
