Chautauqua Lake Child Care, JCC awarded $7.6M for daycare

A childcare center in Mayville and an area college are getting millions of dollars to expand daycare.

On Tuesday, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced more than $106 million in awards through the Childcare Capital Construction Funding Program to support 37 projects that will create and expand access to quality childcare across New York State.

Among those awarded funds were Chautauqua Lake Child Care Center, which was awarded $4,734,578 and Jamestown Community College, which was awarded $2,895,600.

Chautauqua Lake Child Care Center operates out of Chautauqua Lake Central School.

The announcement by the governor does not specify if the award for JCC is for its Jamestown campus, Olean campus or both. JCC has a partnership with YMCA at Olean for Cattaraugus County families. In Jamestown, JCC is currently expanding its physical education complex with a portion to be used by the local YMCA. Plans called for a section to be used for high quality childcare facilities and services for infants to 5 year old children.

“Access to affordable, high-quality childcare is essential for children, families and New York’s economy,” Hochul said in a news release. “These investments will help communities across the state create and improve childcare facilities, giving more families access to the care they need while supporting working parents and strengthening local economies.”

The Childcare Capital Construction Funding Program provides funding for projects that create new childcare capacity or expand existing licensed, registered and permitted childcare programs. Funding may be used for design, construction, reconstruction, renovation and equipment purchases needed to increase the availability of quality childcare across New York State. The program is overseen by the New York State Office of Children and Family Services and administered by the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York.

According to Hochul’s office, Tuesday’s announcement brings the total amount of capital awards for childcare made under the governor to over $150 million, with the last round of funding supporting an estimated 5,500 seats at childcare providers for New York families. The announcement will award $106.5 million to 37 projects across the state following a competitive award process to create, preserve, or expand up to 5,000 additional seats.

Combined, JCC and Chautauqua Lake Child Care were awarded $7,630,178. There were two other agencies in Western New York that received daycare funds: Mercy Hospital of Buffalo was awarded $4,858,389 and Hispanic Heritage Council of Western New York, Inc. was awarded $687,608.

Starting at $4.00/week.
