New secondary school principal hired in Westfield

At their meeting last month, Westfield Academy and Central School Board of Education members approved the appointment of Andrea Marsh as Secondary School Principal, effective Monday through June 15, 2030.

Marsh comes to WACS from the Fredonia School District, where she has served as Assistant Principal for the last two years. Before that, she was the Assistant Principal of a middle school in Jamestown for four years, and she has also served as a K through 12 Instructional Coach in Jamestown in the areas of Math and ELA.

Board members received a presentation from Erie 2-Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES Deputy Superintendent Bryna Moritz regarding the BOCES Capital Project.

Representatives from Young & Wright Architecture, Campus Construction and BPD Municipal Finance were also on hand to discuss the financial impact to Westfield.

According to Moritz, the Capital Improvement Project is a plan to secure the future of BOCES (E2CCB) infrastructure. “This initiative is a foundational investment in the regional learning environments that serve students from across our 27 component districts,” she said. “We’re working to ensure students enrolled in E2CCB programming remain warm, safe, and dry.”

Moritz noted a comprehensive Building Condition Survey (BCS) identified a total of $142 million in facilities needs, but the current project has been narrowed to a $49.5 million “must-do” priority list. This focuses on the highest-risk, highest-impact systems — such as roofs, boilers, and safety infrastructure — to prevent catastrophic system failures, she said.

District Superintendent Ryan Sikoraki said after aid reimbursement, Westfield’s share of the project would be $266,174 over a period of five years.

Board member Tom Tarpley questioned Moritz about the attendance formula that is used to determine each district’s financial responsibility for the project. Tarpley pointed out that the BOCES attendance for WACS is 602, but in a separate agreement with BOCES which the board signed at their last meeting, that number had increased to 629.

Tarpley said the current WACS attendance is 597 students, which makes the 629 number unrealistic. Moritz guaranteed the board the 602 number would be the one used for all five years.

In another presentation, board members heard from Jillian Lindstrom who moderates the First Amendment, First Vote Club at WACS. She reported how members of the club attended a conference in March in Rochester, during which they discussed their initiative to create a hygiene closet and health and wellness day for secondary students.

In other matters of personnel, the board accepted the resignation of Kimberly Alonge, Business Education Teacher for the purpose of retirement, with thanks and appreciation for 29 years of service, effective July 1.

Board members also approved the contract for Lauren Harper as Director of Instruction and Special Education, as presented, as well as the contract for Molly Anderson as Elementary Principal, as presented, effective July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2030. They also approved the termination of Martin Lathrop as Building Maintenance Mechanic, effective April 28.

The budget vote and elections will take place on Tuesday from noon to 8 p.m.

Starting at $3.50/week.
