Bridge repainting complete on Route 20

Motor vehicle traffic on Route 20 between Westfield and Ripley is no longer restricted as repainting the bridge that carries vehicles over two sets of railroad tracks has been completed.
The project involved sandblasting, scraping off old paint and repainting the bridge girders and facia to prevent corrosion, according to officials in the New York State Department of Transportation's Region 5.
Trucks and other vehicles and equipment that support the project have continuously occupied the westbound lane of the full length of the 500-foot bridge since late April. Traffic lights operating at both ends of the bridge control vehicle traffic.
One of six bridges in Chautauqua and Erie Counties being repainted by Erie Paint, the Ripley-Westfield project accounts for roughly $700,000 of the $3.444 million contract for bridge work. The project is being funded by the state and federal governments.
The contract allows for work on all six bridges to be completed by the end of November, though the Route 20 project is moving along well and should be finished well within that schedule, officials said.
