Inmate killed in Collins Correctional Facility

COLLINS - An inmate in a Western New York facility has apparently been killed by a fellow inmate.

According to State Police, on Tuesday at about 11 p.m., the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision notified the Bureau of Criminal Investigation of an altercation at Collins Correctional Facility that resulted in the death of an incarcerated individual.

The preliminary investigation revealed that an incarcerated individual attacked a second incarcerated individual in a Residential Rehabilitation Unit, resulting in serious physical injury. The incarcerated victim was sent to Bertrand Chaffee Hospital and pronounced deceased after life-saving measures were taken.

The victim has been identified as Jose R. Aponte, age 34. The name of the other inmate was not released.

The NYS Department of Corrections and Community Supervision Office of Special Investigations is assisting with this case. The NYS Attorney General's Office was notified and responded to the scene.
