Class is officially back in session as local students returned to school this week. Dunkirk City Schools opened the school year on Thursday, including K-2 elementary schools, Dunkirk's Intermediate School, which houses grades 3-6, and Dunkirk Middle/High School, which houses grades 7-12. Chautauqua Lake Central Schools and the Westfield Academy and Central School District also began classes on Thursday.

The Fredonia Central School District began classes on Wednesday, as did Brocton Central Schools. Gowanda Central Schools got an early start on Tuesday.

Silver Creek Schools hold off until Labor Day weekend passes, with the first day of school coming on Tuesday, Sept. 8. Forestville Central Schools and the Cassadaga Valley Central School District also open on Tuesday, Sept. 8.

First days at local school districts vary much more than usual this year because of how late in the month Labor Day falls this year, on Sept. 7. Districts had to configure schedules with minimum days of instruction and contractual language in mind.

Starting at /week.
