HANOVER -- The Town of Hanover has taken its next step toward dredging Hanover Harbor and Cattaraugus Creek. The Town Board accepted the bid from Littoral Services LLC for sediment sampling and analysis, as well as preparing, coordinating, submitting and obtaining all necessary permits to complete the dredging project.
The total cost of the work will range between $39,056 and $49,481. All necessary permits must be obtained by Feb. 1, 2027. Dave Romano, of GEI Consultants, has been assisting the Town in the dredging process up to this point.
The Town is optimistic that the work can be completed in the early spring of 2027. The Town is aiming to avoid dredging the Creek and the Harbor around the time of the various fishing tournaments held annually in Hanover. The Town hopes to coordinate the timing of the work with the County, the State, and the Army Corps of Engineers.
The dredging project is not the only significant project in the town that is moving forward. Also at its latest meeting, the Town of Hanover directed Highway Superintendent Peter Pelletter to make "any and all necessary repairs" to Buffalo Street and its surrounding areas to abate the flooding issues occurring during heavy rain. The approximate costs for the required repairs and operator expenses amount to approximately $60,000.
The Village of Silver Creek is pursuing a substantial repair project on Buffalo Street to address several issues raised by residents, including flooding concerns. Residents have asked the Silver Creek Village Board to make improvements to Buffalo Street for several years, including new pavement and curbing, as well as drainage.
Mayor Kathy Tampio and Deputy Mayor Jeff Hornburg recently took a walk all the way down Buffalo Street with engineers from EcoStrategies and Department of Public Works Supervisor Brianna Griewisch to discuss potential upgrades to the street. Final plans for the project are being developed, with hopes of breaking ground at some point in 2027.
EcoStrategies was awarded a contract with the Village to handle the planning phase of the project in the amount of $15,000. Tampio said the project will be quite costly, so the Village will pursue grant funding to support the project. Rebecca Wurster, Special Projects Coordinator with the Chautauqua County Department of Planning and Development, will help the Village in hopes of securing grant funding.
Tampio said that once the plans are finalized and the project is ready to move forward, a public meeting will be offered to the residents of Buffalo Street to review the project.
