Concert aims to raise funds for Ripley bat site

2 min read

Buffalo Bat Habitat (BBH), and Third Floor Productions USA are partnering to host a benefit concert on Saturday at Elma Village Green, 3007 Bowen Road, Elma. 'Luci Fest: A Benefit for Bats' will take place from noon to 5 p.m. featuring live music, food trucks, and educational programming. 'Luci' refers to the Latin name for Little Brown Bats, Myotis lucifugus. October is national bat appreciation month, making it an opportune time for education and awareness.

Entertainment for the event to be provided by local bands Edge of Sundown and FMX: The Fleetwood Mac Experience. Educational programming provided by Buffalo Bat Habitat's Executive Director, Dr. Jonathan Townsend.

Buffalo Bat Habitat is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting bat populations and promoting environmental stewardship across Western New York. Third Floor Productions USA is a marketing and promotions company offering a full-suite of digital marketing and event planning services to its customers.

Proceeds from the event will be donated to the Ripley Bat Farm fund, a special habitat conservation effort that Buffalo Bat Habitat has undertaken in the last year. Located along Lake Erie in Ripley, this site hosts a maternity bat colony of particular interest to ecologists. Resistant to White Nose Syndrome, a fungal infection that has decimated bat populations in Western New York by over 90%, this colony represents a biologically resilient group of Little Brown Bats. To purchase this site and preserve their habitat, BBH is looking to raise $1 million through a combination of fundraising and grant awards from New York State.

President of Buffalo Bat Habitat, Brian Caughel, states "This concert will help bring awareness to our efforts to protect a critically important habitat in the WNY region. It will give the public a way to engage with our mission in a way that is fun for the whole family. Empowering citizen scientists is one of our values at Buffalo Bat Habitat, and it's exciting to think about how many people we can reach by inviting the community to enjoy an afternoon out with two phenomenal local bands for a good cause."
