At their meeting in late September, Westfield Academy and Central School Board of Education members learned that the District received a rare accolade in their annual audit report.
The independent audit firm, Drescher & Malacki LLP, gave WACS an unmodified opinion, which is the best rating a school district can receive. Additionally, the audit noted that WACS had a “clean extra classroom audit.”
This notation refers to the auditing of a school district’s extra classroom activity funds. These are funds that are raised through sources other than taxation, such as admissions, dues, sales, or donations.
“The independent auditor made a point of saying we had a clean extra classroom audit, which is rare in school districts,” said Business Manager Joshua Melquist. “This is a testament to the work put in by our district treasurer, co-curricular teacher advisors and student treasurers.”
Board member Tom Tarpley commended all those responsible for the excellent auditor’s report. “This was due, in large part, to the combined efforts of the WACS audit committee and the district’s business office,” he said. “I want to thank all those who worked together, cooperatively, to achieve this good news for WACS.”
Board members were to approve a resolution to approve the independent audit at the Oct. 13 Board of Education meeting.
In other business, Board President Wendy Dyment spoke about the upcoming Chautauqua County School Boards Association Event - NY Inspires and Portrait of a Graduate Update on Wednesday, October 21, 2026.
The dinner meeting will be held at the SUNY Fredonia Williams Center, Dyment said. Assistant NYSED Commissioner, David Frank and Director of Strategy, Shannon Logan, NYSED, will be the presenters, she added.
Dyment also introduced the Second Reading of Policy 676 - Privacy and Security for Student Data and Teacher and Principal Data, and Policy 840 - Artificial Intelligence (AI). Board members subsequently approved both policies.
In another matter, the board accepted a grant from Cummins, Inc. in the amount of $2,000 for the Enviro-Wolverines Club. Board members expressed gratitude for the work of WACS teacher Olivia Clamp in obtaining the grant, and expressed their thanks to Cummins.
Board members also approved two fund raisers for the benefit of the Senior class trip. A candle sale will be held through Oct. 29 and a meat stick sale was to begin on Friday and last until the product is sold out.
The board approved a Memorandum of Agreement between the District and the Westfield Teachers' Association for the addition of the new position of Unified Basketball Coach, effective Sept. 28. There will be a stipend of $2,500 for the position.
