The Dunkirk City School District has awarded dozens of bids worth more than $21 million for the next phase of its long-term construction project.

The Dunkirk Board of Education approved the bids for Phase 1.3 of the project at its October meeting. A total of 24 bids were awarded in six areas of work.

District Superintendent Brian Swatland called it "the biggest phase" in the capital project.

The cafeteria and kitchen at the Middle and High School will get renovated. A new connecting corridor and courtyard will be added at the school. The football field, track, and tennis courts are getting refurbished, and new scoreboards are planned.

In addition, air conditioning will be added to district classrooms. Finally, a new "School Based Health Office" will get added.

The capital project already has a visible benefit: Construction is complete on a new Sixth Street entrance and addition.

The 24 bids awarded for Phase 1.3 totaled $21,171,650. They are as follows:

-- $6,475,000 for five general trades bids, granted to Transit Construction Services Corporation.

-- $5,327,000 for four mechanical bids, given to Scobell Company Inc.

-- $3,775,000 for three electrical bids, offered to Frey Electric Construction Co.
