Ugly sweaters, worthwhile cause

An ugly sweater is more than a laugh when it is worn to an event that makes a difference.
Tonight the SUNY Fredonia Rotaract Club will hold its Ugly Sweater for the Better event at Tully’s Irish Pub, 26 Water St., Fredonia.
Dust off the ugliest holiday sweater you have and join Rotaract and Rotary members for a fun-filled reception from 8 to 11 p.m. There will be drink specials, door prizes, “stocking” raffles (rather than basket raffles) and fun activities like candy cane limbo. Raffles will be called at 10 p.m.
Each year the Fredonia Rotaract Club hosts this event to engage with the community in a fun way while raising important funds for a charitable cause.
“This Ugly Sweater theme seems to be hip right now; there seems to be a lot of these kinds of parties around. So, what the Rotaract Club is doing is taking this neat, fun theme and turning it into a fundraising event,” Rich Ryan, associate director of development at SUNY Fredonia and the club’s advisor, explained.

This year, the students have decided to raise funds for Rotary’s PolioPlus campaign.
“This is the third year they’ve done the Ugly Sweater event. In the past they have raised funds for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. That’s a great cause, however, the current slate of officers in the Fredonia Rotaract Club have decided to try to tighten the bond between the Rotaract Club and Rotary International, specifically the Fredonia Rotary Club and the Westfield/Mayville Rotary Club, which are the Fredonia Rotaract Club’s two co-sponsoring clubs from Rotary,” Ryan added.
The focus of Rotary this year, PolioPlus aims to eliminate polio globally. The campaign has reduced polio cases by 99.9 percent worldwide since its first project to vaccinate children in the Philippines in 1979, according to www.rotary.org.
Since 2011, the mission of Fredonia Rotaract Club is to provide an opportunity for young men and women to enhance the knowledge and skills pertaining to personal development, address the physical and social needs of the community, and to promote better relations worldwide.
The public is invited and encouraged to attend tonight’s event.
