CELORON — A strong line of thunderstorms that produced a lightning show almost as impressive as the fireworks display earlier in the evening proved too much for tree limbs and power lines in southern Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties late Monday.
Area fire departments worked into the early morning hours for a variety of weather-related calls. A storm system rolled into the area shortly before 11 p.m., just hours after the makeup Labor Day fireworks display was held downtown.
The city was forced to move the display back a day after rain washed out the festivities Sunday.
Around midnight Tuesday, the National Weather Service in Buffalo issued a flash flood warning after about 2 inches of rain fell in the Jamestown and Salamanca areas. The warning lasted until 3 p.m.
In Lakewood, firefighters responded to 14 weather-related calls in the village and as mutual aid with neighboring departments. Fire Chief Kurt Hallberg said the majority of responses occurred within an hour and was due to strong winds wreaking havoc on area trees.
“We had a whole lot of branches and wires down, but nothing too serious” Hallberg said. “I even had a bunch of branches down in my yard.”
In the village of Celoron, firefighters responded to 223 S. Hanford Ave. after a tree uprooted and fell onto a nearby home. Fire officials said the tree punctured two holes in the roof in the fall.
Around the same time Celoron firefighters also responded to Avalon Boulevard for smoke coming from the basement of a residence. The smoke originated from a furnace after a possible power surge to the property.
Meanwhile, firefighters in Jamestown were dispatched overnight to nine incidents, most of which were for power lines down. No significant damage was reported in the city, Battalion Chief Matthew Coon said.
“Just a lot of wires down, mostly due to trees,” Coon said.
There were several power outages reported throughout the service area of the Jamestown Board of Public Utilities, which began occurring around midnight due to high winds. Rebecca Robbins, BPU communications coordinator, said power was back on to all BPU service areas by 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. She said the last area to have power restored was around East Elmwood Avenue in Falconer, which is where just a couple houses were without power.
Robbins said power was restored to Celoron by 3 p.m., with some portions having power restored by noon. She said power was out in the village in the vicinity of Jackson Avenue, Livingston Avenue, and Fifth and Seventh streets.
Robbins said the heavy winds knocked down a lot of large trees and limbs. She said in some cases the limbs ripped power lines off of houses. She added that anyone who is still without power should call the BPU customer service line at 661-1660 or the 24-hour trouble line at 661-1640.
