More waterline breaks; Fredonia seeking source

Crews work on Forest Place Friday morning after another water-main break in the village.

The leaks in Fredonia continued Friday, but where exactly is unknown as the village continues to lose water.

The village will resume its efforts this morning to try and locate the source of the problem, according to Mayor Athanasia Landis.

Two leaks were found Friday morning and subsequently repaired. But Landis said the village is still losing water and they haven’t found the location as to where it’s occurring. Landis told the OBSERVER that hours were spent Friday trying to locate the leak.

“We know we’re losing water, but we could not find the leak,” she said Friday night. “We found something small but it wasn’t it. Sometime in the morning, we’re thinking of going and checking the creek because it could very well be a leak under the creek that we cannot see right now.”

The mayor is urging village residents to be alert for standing water as they look for more breaks and try to locate exactly where the issue is originating.

Recent water main breaks date as far back as Oct. 4. During the month, the village has dealt with more than 10 breaks.

Last weekend, a major leak was found in the Castile Heights area after the water filter plant operator noted high water usage and decreasing water levels and capacity. Village crews moved to successfully repair the break.

The village subsequently contacted the Chautauqua County Department of Health & Human Services, which recommended conserve water and boil water orders. The conserve water order was lifted last weekend while the boil water order was lifted Tuesday.

No orders were issued as of Friday evening.
