Two Republicans and one Democrat were unofficial winners for Fredonia village trustee seats.

Three seats were up for grabs, two for a four-year term and one to fulfill a two-year term following Marc Ruckman’s resignation.

Republicans Doug Essek and Roger Britz Jr. unofficially secured the most votes, according to results posted by the Chautauqua County Board of Elections. Essek, the incumbent, and Britz Jr. both secured 28 percent of the overall vote. Each will serve a four-year term.

“I’m very happy,” Essek said following Tuesday’s results. “I think myself and Roger will bring some new perspective to the village board and we’ll move the village forward on a lot of positive things.”

Essek and Britz Jr. were among four candidates vying for two seats on the board. Democrats Leslie Wille and Steven Yunghans were the other two. Wille secured 25 percent of the overall vote and Yunghans secured 17 percent of the overall vote.

While he’s glad it’s all over, Britz congratulated all the candidates who stepped forward and wanted to run for the village.

“It was very difficult for all of us,” Britz Jr. said. “If anything with the election, it brought people to the polls, it got people talking again and it got a buzz going in our village again, and I’m excited about that. Win, lose or draw, I think it was a great experience for all of us in the village.”

Democrat Michael C. Barris garnered the most votes to serve two years on the board. Barris secured 43 percent in a three-person race. Republican Dale Ricker received 38 percent of the vote and Village Vitality candidate Ron Sellers received 18 percent of the overall vote.

Barris said following Tuesday’s results that he’s looking forward to serving two years on the board.

With Tuesday’s results, the village board will be comprised of two Republicans and three Democrats. Fredonia Athanasia Landis is a Democrat.
