Westfield to honor Bereda family with second 5k

The Bereda Family.

WESTFIELD — On Saturday, the community will once again come together in the village of Westfield to honor the loss of two young children.

Brennen Isaac Bereda, 5 and Finley Elise Bereda, 1, were tragically killed in a motor vehicle accident on July 18, 2017 in Terre Haute, Indiana. Mother, Christina, and middle child Jorden David, 3, were taken to the hospital that day, where they thankfully recovered.

The second annual Run for Bereda will take place at Welch Field at 10 a.m., ending there as well. The family, who has ties to the community through several relatives, now resides in Shiloh, Illinois. The whole family will be at the event this year as runners take to the streets to commemorate their children’s memory in the 5K run/walk.

Christina and her husband Maj. David Bereda, are both doctors and are avid members of the running community. The run/walk will be followed immediately by the children’s Rhino & Butterfly Stampede, a one-mile fun run/walk where children are encouraged to dress-up as their favorite animal.

Unlike last year, there will be professional timing and finish line services provided through Race Management Solutions. Awards will be presented to the 1st place overall male and female finishers in the 5K race and age group awards will be given to the top three male and female 5K runners in each of the following age groups: 14 and under, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70 and older. Refreshments, light food/snacks will be provided following the event.

Online registration will remain open right up until the night before the race. Race day registration and packet pickup will take place at Welch Field beginning at 8:30 a.m.; the cost is $25. There is no charge for the stampede run, participants however should still be registered online to sign the waiver. To register, visit www.itsyourrace.com/event.aspx?id=10997.

All proceeds will benefit the Bereda Children’s Memorial Fund, a non-profit set up through the Roger Tory Peterson Institute that will support efforts to build a memorial garden in honor of Brennen and Finley.
