City chief notes ‘new tips’ in fatal stabbing

More than one week after a fatal stabbing of a city teenager, residents continue to seek information regarding the horrific events that transpired on Lincoln Avenue. So far, however, there has been little released by the Dunkirk Police Department.

In a statement to the OBSERVER this week, city Police Chief David Ortolano noted “there have been new tips that are being investigated, but that nothing more is being released to avoid hindering the investigation.” Ortolano also shared that detectives are working “around the clock doing 16-hour shifts.”

A memorial service for Jefrena C. Brown, the 15-year-old Dunkirk High School freshman who died from the stabbing incident at Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo on May 16, will take place on Wednesday according to a notice on Page A2 Thursday from the McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home. The service will be at 1 p.m. at the Dunkirk American Legion Post 62.

In recent days, the OBSERVER has also heard from sources about a potential second video showing that the incident may have started in Washington Park before moving to Lincoln Avenue on May 15. A crowd of nearly 50 people watched as the incident took place with the person of interest believed to be a woman in her 20s.

Anyone with information can call the city department at 366-2266 or they can leave an anonymous tip on the department’s tip line at 363-0313. All calls will be kept confidential.
