Standoff ends without violence; man arrested

A Sunday morning standoff in Pomfret ended without violence.

Gary T. Ortolano, 57, was arrested for fourth degree criminal possession of a weapon after negotiations with the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team.

“On Sunday June 6th at approximately 7:43 a.m. Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office Deputies were called to an address on Stone Road in the town of Pomfret for reports of a male subject threatening use of a shotgun,” according to a press release from the sheriff’s office. “Upon arrival, and after an extended period of time, the CCSO SWAT Team, as well as the CCSO Crisis Negotiation Team and Chautauqua County Emergency Services responded to the scene, where a Incident Command Center was established.”

Ortolano was taken into custody without incident. A shotgun was recovered from the residence. The sheriff’s office release states that since Ortolano is a convicted felon, he is not supposed to possess a firearm.

Ortolano was taken to the sheriff’s office in Mayville for arrest processing and then placed in the Chautauqua County Jail pending arraignment.

The sheriff’s deputies were assisted by personnel of the New York State Police (including use of their surveillance drone).
