Lions Club marking 70 years of service at fair

Having a permanent structure allows the Dunkirk-Fredonia Lions to provide great food products in a clean and sanitary kitchen.

The Dunkirk-Fredonia Lions Club has been serving customers at the Chautauqua County Fair since 1949. For the first 15 years, the food was prepared and served in a tent. In 1954, the club received permission to build a removable structure on the current site at the fairgrounds.

The current Lions Club Fair Stand was built by the club in 1969. The fair stand serves as one of the major fund- raising projects for the Dunkirk-Fredonia Lions. Club members cook and serve Italian sausage, beef on weck, hot dogs, hamburgers and french fries to customers. In 2010, the club introduced a signature sandwich called “Lion Burger” which is a double patty bacon cheeseburger that includes fried onions, barbeque sauce and bleu cheese.

As a not-for-profit organization, the Lions use the proceeds from their fair stand to provide services for sight and hearing impaired people and to support a wide variety of community service projects that benefit the local community. Profits from fair stand operations helps to fund eye exams, hearing exams, glasses and hearing aids for people in our community.

The Lions Club also uses the proceeds to support a Breakfast with Santa event, a loan closet of durable medical equipment, financial support for the development of seeing eye dogs, radio reading services for the blind and scholarships for area high school seniors.

Community members who are interested in serving the community by becoming a member of Lions International are encouraged to stop by the fair stand and leave their contact information.

Located near the grandstand entrance, the Lions Club offers a family friendly seating area for customers.

The Dunkirk-Fredonia Lions Club can be contacted at Box 44 Dunkirk, NY 14048 or by phone at 716-672-8509. Please visit us at the Chautauqua County Fair!
