Common Council eyes changes at city barns

Brush and grass collection at the city of Dunkirk’s Department of Public Works barns is looking to be tightened up.

A resolution is on the docket at today’s Common Council meeting regarding this, and states that the current administration is seeking an intermunicipal solution to the storage problem of brush and yard waste. The city is also looking at possibly suspending contractor permits for dumping yard waste until a new storage location can be found, the only exception being for contractors who do landscaping and yard maintenance for city residents, particularly those who are elderly or disabled. The resolution also tosses about the idea of installing cameras at the barns to help identify improper vehicles.

Other resolutions that are be to discussed include an extension on the agreement with Land Bank to allow for demolition of blighted properties through to 2020 and the possible entering into mutual aid agreement with the county to dispose of demolition waste more cost-effectively.

Also being discussed this evening will be the appointment of Miriam Lugo-Alfaro to the Dunkirk Zoning Board, a notice of claim by Lynne Dimmer for damages to her tractor after it allegedly fell in an uncovered manhole and a request to organize a “We the People” solidarity march by the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Women’s Action Group on Sept. 21.

The city of Dunkirk Common Council meeting will take place at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall.
