City man finds article tying him to Army service

Submitted Photo Dunkirk resident James Bialaszewski served in Vietnam as a member of the U.S. Army.

More than 50 years ago, Dunkirk resident James Bialaszewski was serving with the U.S. Army in Vietnam. He was with a group of seven men when his group was called into action.

More than a year ago, while visiting his daughter in South Carolina, he recalled the mission. His most specific recollection was that the military newspaper — The Stars and Stripes — was on the scene to interview the U.S. Army crew.

“Fifty years later, I finally see this article,” he said, noting it was found during a search by computer. His daughter then helped him receive a copy of the article documenting the event.

Bialaszewski’s group was responding to a call to action where a group of Viet Cong were seen by U.S. airplane reconnaissance flight nearby in a field near Tuy Hoa in 1967. “Rapidly they prepared for action,” the article noted. “They fired the computed data and rounds on the (Viet Cong).”

Bialaszewski said all the men who were part of the action have since passed away except for him and one other man, PFC. Terry J. Dixon, who is currently living in Iowa.

“We answered the call,” he said.
