Cattaraugus, Erie awarded regional economic grant funds

While Chautauqua County received state funding for 16 projects, including nearly $3 million for a vacant warehouse on Talcott Street, it was far from the only county to get financial assistance.

On Thursday it was announced the Western New York Regional Economic Development Council (WNYREDC) was awarded $67.3 million for 109 projects that build on the region’s assets and invest in the future.

CATTARAUGUS COUNTY

Cattaraugus County received funds for 11 projects. Some area projects include:

¯ $230,000 for a new salt storage shed at Markhams Barn, 9196 Rt. 62, Dayton;

¯ $50,000 so the county can develop a Strategic Economic Development Plan that will assess the natural, built, and human assets of the Cattaraugus County and outline a path for future economic growth and prosperity;

¯ $30,000 to the village of South Dayton to complete an engineering report to evaluate disinfection alternatives for its wastewater treatment plant.

¯ $78,000 to the Gowanda Area Redevelopment Corporation.

This grant, to undertake an economic redevelopment analysis study to help determine the steps to sustainably stimulate the local economy long term, including improving wages and neighborhoods.

Some major projects for the county include:

¯ $287,000 to the town of Allegany to make upgrades to Town Hall to improve accessibility for handicapped persons.

¯ $200,000 to the Olean Community Theatre to acquire and develop the Temple B’nai Israel building into a state-of-the-art theatre.

¯ $191,830 to the town of Carrollton to install an ultraviolet disinfection system at the Limestone Wastewater Treatment Plant to improve the quality of effluent entering the Tunungwant Creek.

ERIE COUNTY

Erie County received funding for 54 project. Some area projects included:

¯ $323,000 for the town of Evans to undertake repairs to the western breakwater at Sturgeon Point Marina to ensure continued use of this facility and eliminate the need for costly annual dredging maintenance of the marina basin.

¯ $30,000 for the town of Evans to complete a Evans Lake Erie Shoreline Stabilization Study. This plan and design will provide innovative shoreline management strategies and nature-based concept designs to address environmental issues at Lake Erie Beach Park.

Some major projects for the county included:

¯ $5 million to the town of Cheektowaga to reduce sanitary sewer overflows by slip lining sewers and reducing inflow and infiltration. The project will help improve water quality in the Buffalo River.

¯ $2.5 million to Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper to aid in the transformation of the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Centennial Park, an aging park on the shore of Lake Erie in the City of Buffalo, through natural shoreline restoration, wetlands and bioretention areas.

¯ $1 million to Kleinhans Music Hall Management to embark on necessary repairs and upgrades to the building mechanicals and structure in order to ensure its ability to operate as a world class venue for the foreseeable future.

¯ $714,000 to Steuben Foods in Elma to expand its advanced food and beverage manufacturing facility by acquiring additional equipment to keep up with growing demand from its customers.

Since its inception in 2011, over $6.9 billion has been awarded by the Regional Economic Development Council to more than 8,300 projects that are projected to create and retain more than 240,000 jobs statewide.
