Three high school seniors were honored as “Scholars of the Month” by the Rotary Club of Westfield-Mayville during its Dec. 10 meeting at the Lakeshore Assembly of God Church in Westfield. The honorees and their respective high schools were Abigail Warner of Westfield Academy and Central School, McKenna Dorman of Chautauqua Lake Central School and Jenelle Grigelevich of Brocton Central School.

Rotary Club President John Hamels welcomed the guests of honor, their parents, school administrators and Rotarians to the meeting. Following dinner and some club business, Rotarian Dan Smith, Club Youth Services Chair, described the various youth services which the Westfield-Mayville Rotary Club supports. Then he and Rotarians Barbara Fay and Luci Petrella each introduced one of the scholars and announced some of the honorees’ many accomplishments. Club President Hamels then awarded a framed certificate and a pen to each of the scholars.

Abigail Warner, the daughter of Christopher and Carol Warner of Westfield, is a Westfield Academy and Central School senior. By the end of her senior year, this scholar will have earned 28 Jamestown Community College credits through various courses she has taken. She also will have completed two Advanced Placement courses and others required for local credit. Warner will graduate in June of 2020 with a Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation.

In her sophomore year, Warner was inducted into the WACS Chapter of the National Honor Society. She is a friendly and reliable student who embodies the NHS core values of character, leadership, scholarship and service. She was named as Student of the Month in both her tenth and eleventh grade years. Also, Warner has served on the prom committee, and she is a member of the environmental club and senior high chorus. She has held roles in the WACS’ stage productions of “Into the Woods” and “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.”

Warner is also a member of the varsity volleyball and softball teams. She has served as captain in both sports, and was named first team all-star, second team all-star, and most valuable player in softball. Outside of school, this scholar volunteers at the Northern Chautauqua Canine Rescue and the Thrifty Kitty. She has held employment at Tops Friendly Markets, and was a Project Wild America Youth Ambassador at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History. In the fall of 2020, Warner will attend Jamestown Community College and then SUNY Fredonia for her studies, so that she may prepare for a career as a chiropractor.

McKenna Dorman, daughter of Peter Dorman and Sonya Dorman of Ripley, is a Chautauqua Lake Central School senior who will graduate in June of 2020 with an Advanced Regents Diploma with Science endorsement.

A two-year member of the CLCS Chapter of the National Honor Society, Dorman has been recognized for her outstanding academic work. She received the University of Rochester Xerox Award, Student Sage Award, and the CÈrtificat de MÈrite en Français III. Also, Dorman has been recognized for achievement in history, math and science, and has earned the Academic Progress Award.

Dorman is a Science Olympiad member, co-editor of the yearbook, and cast member of the CLCS Musical Theatre. She is also a participant of the WNY Youth Action Climate Summit, and last summer she attended the Summer Institute for Human Rights and Genocide Studies. After her high school graduation, Dorman plans to attend Alfred University to prepare for a career as an English as Second Language (ESL) teacher, or as a translator / interpreter.

Jenelle Grigelevich, daughter of Jenean Roth of Portland and Jonathon Grigelevich of Florida, is a Brocton Central School senior who has always been an advanced science student. Thanks to her high school’s science programs and outside education, this scholar has found a true love for biology and environmental studies. She is the BCS Envirothon Team Captain.

Over the summer, Grigelevich worked at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History as one of eight young adults who were chosen as Project Wild America Youth Ambassadors. During this program, she was able to expand her knowledge of local flora and fauna and how to handle wildlife, as well as being able to gain much field work experience.

Grigelevich is a committed BCS athlete, who participates in varsity volleyball, bowling and softball. As a freshman, she earned second team for the varsity softball team, and the following year she won first team. During her junior year, she earned another first team award, as well as the team most valuable player award. Grigelevich is currently the youngest player on a 21u Travel softball team out of Buffalo, and she plays softball year-round.

After her high school graduation, she plans to attend Mercyhurst North East and Main Campus, and then Unity College in Maine. She will major in biology-environmental science, live on campus and play Division II softball.

The Rotary Club of Westfield-Mayville proudly congratulates Abigail Warner, McKenna Dorman and Jenelle Grigelevich on their many outstanding high school achievements, and it wishes them much success during their college studies and future careers.
