A HAND FOR HAND: Officer honored for saving life

OBSERVER Photo by M.J. Stafford

Give Zachary Hand a hand: The Fredonia police officer saved a young man’s life. On Dec. 14, while on foot patrol downtown, Hand administered first aid to Darien Booker, who had fallen through a plate glass window and sustained a severe cut to his bicep. Hand placed a tourniquet on Booker to stop the bleeding, saving his life. Fredonia Police Chief Philip Maslak gave an award to Hand Monday at the village Board of Trustees meeting to honor his actions. Hand is seen here shaking Booker’s hand after receiving the award, with Booker’s parents and Maslak nearby looking on.
