Relatives of people in city government was a hot issue during the public portion of Dunkirk’s Common Council meeting Tuesday.

City resident Jeanette Delgado spoke earnestly about payroll of city employees related to Dunkirk Mayor Wilfred Rosas. The information was brought up at the Personnel Committee meeting that was held on Feb. 27 and subsequently published in the OBSERVER, which is what turned her attention to it.

“I’m just following up on a newspaper article in reference to the mayor and the amount of family members that are employed in the city of Dunkirk that are related to him,” Delgado stated. “I just want to point out for the public that we live in a very tight community and it is very often, including our police department where (Chief David) Ortolano’s son works. I believe (First Ward Councilman) Don Williams has two children that are employed by the city. There’s Tenamores that are related. I just wish that we could possibly find better things to do with our time unless we want to go through every department and figure out who’s all related to who and make that all public too. I just think that this is kind of biased at this point to just pick at one particular group of people. I just want it public knowledge that the mayor is not the only person that is employed by the city of Dunkirk that has relatives also employed.”

Later on in the meeting Williams responded to Delgado saying, “Yes, I do have a son that works full time for the city. That’s been mentioned at every meeting, especially that same meeting that we had last week and I do also have one that works seasonal. I don’t see anything going on with that differently. I don’t supervise them, I don’t do anything.”
