Fireworks, boat races axed

Cancellations continue

City of Dunkirk Mayor Wilfred Rosas has canceled the Fourth of July celebration and the Great Lakes Offshore Grand Prix. These are two of the largest events in the city and join the ever increasing list of summer events being axed in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The state is not recommending events as of right now that would have more than 10 people,” Rosas stated at the city’s Common Council meeting Tuesday evening. “There is nothing that we can do to enforce social distancing with events of this magnitude. We have thousands of people who come in for the fireworks and we just won’t be able to control social distancing.”

Music on the Pier is also postponed further out to the second week of July and the Camp Gross program has also be canceled for this summer. However, Rosas has asked staff to come up with a program where the city could provide lunches at one of the city parks.
