Fredonia Farmers Market seeing increased sales

The Fredonia Farmers Market has seen sales skyrocketing the last few weeks, to the point that they are practically selling out before 11:30 a.m.

“It has been rapid as far as sales,” Anneliese Bruegel, market manager shared. “I don’t expect it to continue, it’s good, but not so much for later morning people.”

Bruegel had noticed that this past weekend was incredibly busy, but had seen a trend in increased shopping shaping up for weeks.

“It’s great to see so much support to local farmers as they’ve been hurting too through all of this,” Bruegel added. “I’m expecting to see more product this week, but I don’t want people to be surprised.”

One thing that’s been really good has been the increase in SNAP benefits that has been given to families during the pandemic.

“Families are using more at the farmers market,” Bruegel stated. “Families are taking $200 and ordering bulk frozen meat packages with SNAP. That’ll be enough meat to last them several months. These are things they wouldn’t have been able to buy before and it benefits the farmers as well as that’s hundreds of dollars extra that they made in a single day which is important income for these people.”

Bruegel pointed out that these extra funds being spent greatly help the local economy.

The Fredonia Farmers Market takes place Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and visitors are asked to follow the New York State Farmers Market Federation guidelines of wearing a mask, allowing vendors to serve you, following a six-foot rule and not lingering.
