Some libraries in the area have reopened

Libraries reopened last week with restrictions in place, but officials have a lot to be happy about.

“We still have a lot of programs going on in the library,” said Jason Hammond, director of the Dunkirk Public Library. “Albeit from a distance we’re still accomplishing a lot. We have craft kits for the kids that they can pick up, we’re doing our summer reading program virtually this year, the adult book club has moved to GoodReads and we’re posting activities and entertainment online.”

There can be 20 visitors in the library at a time and all social distancing protocols must be followed including the 6-foot rule and wearing a mask. Computer use is by appointment only and curbside pickup is still available for those who wish to use it.

The Dunkirk Public Library updates its site weekly and has remained active through their Facebook page and on YouTube, Hammond cited that all of their content can be found on their website dunkirklibrary.org.

Over at the Cassadaga Branch Library, things are pretty similar.

“We reopened (July 8),” Director Hannah Abram said. “We have restrictions including a 6-foot rule, six visitors at a time, masks must be worn at all times and we must be informed of bathroom usage.”

Abram shared that all surfaces touched by patrons will be sanitized and checked out materials will be quarantined for 72 hours before being placed back on the shelves.

“We have several programs online including story time,” Abram said. “We’re thinking of trying Zoom with our bookclub if possible.”

Ahira Hall Memorial Library in Brocton is taking a different stance during the pandemic, offering quick service as opposed to general library usage. Unlike the other libraries open during regular hours Ahira Hall will be open Mondays 2-7 and Thursdays 11-4. During these times up to five patrons can enter the library and indicate which materials they wish to check out and the service desk will get them.

“It’s a limited touch service,” said Julie Putcher, director. “It allows us to keep things in check and as little contamination as possible.”

Ahira Hall is still doing curbside pick-up on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2-7 p.m. and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“We still have kids grab packs to go and we’re looking forward to seeing our regular patrons once again,” Putcher said.

Darwin R. Barker Library in Fredonia was unable to be reached for comment. According to their Facebook page and website, the library is still closed the public.

Anderson-Lee Library in Silver Creek is at this time only doing curbside still.
