CVCS appoints new principal, sets tax rate

Cassadaga Valley has a new middle high school principal.

During this week’s school board meeting, Christopher Rusco was appointed to the vacant position. He had previously served as the assistant middle high school principal.

Rusco was appointed by a 4-1 vote. Newly elected board member Aaron Richner voted against the resolution. During the board meeting he did not elaborate on why he voted no.

Rusco thanked the board for their appointment and said he is ready to help the district move forward.

The position had previously been held by Scot Stutzman. Stutzman was one among several individuals that were laid off at the end of the school year. In late May school Superintendent Chuck Leichner announced the school was cutting up to 21 positions due to budgetary issues, including two working supervisor positions in the buildings and grounds department; one cleaner position in the buildings and grounds department; the school resource officer, which was a contracted service; two clerk II positions which are from the elementary building and the middle/high school building; the district treasurer position; a building level administrative position; and 13 teaching positions.

On Monday during the school board meeting, Leichner said some of those individuals who were laid off have been brought back, but he did not say how many or which positions were restored.

In unrelated business, the school board set the true tax rate at $14.846563 per $1,000 assessed valuation. The exact tax rate for the nine different townships in the school district are as follows:

¯ Arkwright – $33.36 (44.5% equalization rate);

¯ Charlotte – $16.75 (88.6% equalization rate);

¯ Cherry Creek – $17.63 (84.2% equalization rate);

¯ Ellery – $16.49 (90% equalization rate);

¯ Ellicott – $14.84 (100% equalization rate);

¯ Ellington – $14.84 (100% equalization rate);

¯ Gerry – $16.35 (90.8% equalization rate);

¯ Pomfret – $87.33 (17% equalization rate);

¯ Stockton – $14.84 (100% equalization rate).

The amount to be raised by taxes is $5,323,787 with a tax levy increase of $2,793, which is a 0.05% increase.
