Dunkirk police, firefighters assist community

The Dunkirk Professional Firefighters 616 gave away 10 Christmas dinners to families in need Saturday.
"In year's past we've done gifts for children and this year we're being more thoughtful in our exposure to the children," Union Chapter President Devin Freitas said. "We kind of came up with the idea of giving away meals to less fortunate."
Twenty-Five active and 30 retired members collected donations.
"We were able to collect 10 dinners that included both a turkey and a ham and all the fixings, desserts and condiments you could think of that you'd need for the day along with smoke detectors and fuel alarms for every family," Freitas added. "That was our giveback to our community that takes care of us and pays our wages and shows a lot of support to us"
Freitas said that it feels awesome being able to give back to the community.
"People are always so appreciative of us all year round and then you do something like that and it makes you feel like you made even more of a difference," he said.
In addition to the donations done by the fire department, the Dunkirk Police Department also helped city residents by doing their Santa for Seniors campaign again this year.
The department packaged the necessities and handed the bags out to local seniors. In a Facebook post on the department's page, they stated that "It was a little bit different this year due to COVID-19 as it was contactless delivery so they did not get to visit with them, but we were happy to make sure our area seniors in need have what they need for the holiday season."
