Silver Creek seniors raise funds for veterans

SILVER CREEK — The 12th grade government class at Silver Creek High School works hard every year to complete its annual holiday project through the Adopt-a-Veteran program of WNY Heroes, a nonprofit that assists military families in need.

Despite the challenges brought to their lives by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Silver Creek seniors remained committed to giving back to the community during a time of uncertainty.

But they had to get creative.

Instead of the usual $1 hat day and bake sale they used to raise money in the past, the Class of 2021 organized “dress for the cause” days — a patriotic day and a pajama day. They designed flyers and posted reminders on social media to encourage the high school student body to support the effort.

Combined with donations from staff throughout the district, the seniors reached their goal and were able to purchase items for a local veteran family to help make their holiday season a little brighter.
