After sour year, cookie sale hopes rise

If you head to the D&F Plaza outside of Big Lots on either of the next two Saturday mornings, you can walk away with sweet reward.

Girl Scout Troop 20158 will at the location from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. selling Girl Scout Cookies. The cookie selection this year returns all the old favorites, such as S’mores, Thin Mints and Peanut Butter Patties, but also welcomes a new cookie to the mix, called Toast Yay!, which is a cookie inspired by French toast.

Because of the pandemic, sales last year for troops all around were trickier than normal years, but Troop 20158 leader Donna Banach is hoping things are better this year.

“We were shut down in the first week of sales last year,” she said. “We were not allowed to be out in public. We had to set up Venmo for people to pay us and then we delivered them. When we were shut down, we had 2,200 packages of cookies left. We were selling those until June.”

Community members came together and bought up the lot, with many of those packages being donated to military members and to Meals on Wheels. This year, while some Troops won’t be out, Banach’s Troop is going to be out doing a few small sales.

“Everybody is working hard to make it successful,” Banach said. “People always want cookies.”

Cookies are still available for delivery as well, with customers still being able to pay via that Venmo account or by mailing in checks. Each pack of cookies costs $5, and the money earned from this fundraiser helps maintain the Girl Scout Camps, programs and field trips for the girls, community service projects and other scouting activities.

If you would like more information about joining Girl Scouts, Scouting Programs or Girl Scout cookies, you can contact Banach at 785-6180.

Starting at $3.50/week.
