Statue restoration work at church is ‘wonderful’

A group of statues have been restored at St. Hedwig’s church.

The statues of St. Hedwig Roman Catholic Church on Townsend Street in Dunkirk are back at home again following restoration in Chicago earlier this year.

In looking at the photos prior to repair one can see the damage that had befallen the artwork over the years, but now repaired, repainted and retrimmed in gold, the statues are complete once more.

“The statues were really bad, but from a distance the cracks and chips were indistinguishable. They all looked like this,” Said Fr. Jan Trela of Saint Mary Angela parishes. “Now they look completely different.”

One statue of St. Hedwig herself Trela said was painted “like a fence” now she retains the warmth and glow of how she appeared before. “I like the most what she did with St. Hedwig,” Trela added.

Trela soon pointed to the crucifix behind the altar and spoke highly of the work done to Jesus.

“With Jesus, I love this cross so much, it is so wonderful, it’s carved out of wood and they were able to restore it beautifully,” Trela stated. “They filled in the cracks and repainted it, it is beautiful.”

The women responsible for the work are a pair of Ukraine twins known as Savka Art, the principle twin, Nadiya, is responsible for the bulk of the work and has done restoration work on paintings in museums in Chicago as well as restoration work in a church in Perry, Ohio, which is where Trela received their information.

In addition to the work done Trela commissioned a nine-foot tall painting of St. John Paul II which was made for St. Hyacinth church that will soon be displayed there.

Trela said he was proud of the work that was done on the statues and is happy to see them at home once more.
