Two outstanding Westfield Academy and Central School graduating seniors have been given special recognition as Scholars of the Month by the Rotary Club of Westfield-Mayville. Emma Heim earned the distinction for the month of May, and Owen Bates was awarded the honor for June. Each received a framed certificate and hearty congratulations.

Heim is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chad and Jenna Heim of Westfield. She has been named the WACS Class of 2021 Salutatorian. She enrolled in eight Jamestown Community College courses, and by the end of her senior year, she will have earned 24 JCC credits.

Heim will also earn three SUNY College at Buffalo credits for one course and three additional SUNY Fredonia credits for another course. This June she will graduate with a Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation with Mastery in Science.

In her sophomore year, Heim was inducted into the WACS Chapter of the National Honor Society. She serves as the secretary for her class and captain of the high school academic bowl. Heim has been the captain of the girls varsity swim team for the past two seasons.

Heim is a member of the senior high chorus, senior high band, drama club, Westwinds (a select choral ensemble) and Firecrackers (an all-female choral group). She has been active on the stage in several of WACS’ drama productions. She has held roles in Newsies, A Christmas Carol and Camp Rock, and was in the band for The Adventure of Nicholas Nickelby.

This scholar was selected by her teachers as the JCC Connections Student of the Year.

She is the recipient of the Katie Mansfield Scholarship, and she was a WACS Student of the Month. With all of her honors, accolades and achievements, Heim chose to take on one additional responsibility. She is a member of the first WACS cohort who will also earn the New York State Seal of Biliteracy this June.

Outside of school, she was employed at the Westfield YWCA, Boxcar Barney’s, Keeping Traditions and Bethany Camp. She volunteers with the YWCA After School Program as a Spanish teacher, and with the Centaur Stride Therapeutic Horse Stables. In the fall of 2021, Heim will attend Ashland University to pursue a degree in political science and Spanish.

Bates is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Terence and Kelly Bates of Westfield. He has earned the honor of being the WACS Class of 2021 Valedictorian.
