City market begins new season today

Today kicks off the 2021 Dunkirk Farmers’ Market season. The market will take place every Wednesday through Oct. 13 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. outside the Dunkirk Senior Center at Cliffstar Court — rain or shine.

“We are excited to announce the opening of the 2021 Dunkirk Farmers Market season,” said E.J.Hayes, city of Dunkirk deputy director of Planning & Development.

Hayes also announced the market has again been selected to the Field & Fork Network’s Double Up Program.

“We are thrilled to received funding support from the state Double Up Food Bucks Program for the third year in a row,” he said. “The program allows SNAP users to double up to $20 of their SNAP dollars at the market. SNAP money can go towards any of the foods eligible at a grocery store; the extra Double Up dollars are for fresh produce. It’s a wonderful program helping SNAP users access fresh Western New York foods, while keeping SNAP dollars local to support our farmers.”

The Double Up Program begins July 1 and runs through the end of the season.

Roberto Fred Farms and Richard Feinen Farms will return to the market weekly. Both offer a wide variety of vegetables, fruit, herbs, flowers, preserves, honey, and vegetable plants. Franklin’s Honey& Apples will also be on hand with their assortment of delicious kettle corn, honey and apple products. Gardens of Eternity will return, offering a range of natural body products, jewelry, handmade soaps, washcloths and more.

In addition, and new this season, Roberto Fred Farms will also be offering an assortment of freshly baked items for sale.

Market management asks that all visitors to the market continue to follow state COVID-19 guidance. The wearing of a mask will be optional for all fully vaccinated vendors and customers attending the market. Unvaccinated market vendors and customers will be required to wear protective face coverings.

The Dunkirk Farmers Market accepts EBT/SNAP benefits, WIC and Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program benefits, and WIC VF checks. The market is awaiting more information on the availability of FreshConnect the checks distributions, once they are available, they can be redeemed through the end of the season. The Dunkirk Farmers Market thanks the Farmers Market Federation of New York and the Field & Fork Network for its generous support.
