Five rescued from garage collapse

Five people escaped a garage collapse around 5 p.m Friday at 21 St. Hedwig Ave.in the city of Dunkirk.

Two adults and three children were inside at the time of the collapse. The garage was said to be under renovation.

A male had to be pulled out of the structure by rescue workers. He was taken to an ambulance, screaming in pain, then transported to a hospital for further treatment.

The other adult, a woman, was treated on-site by emergency responders. The three children were apparently not seriously injured.

Responding agencies included the fire departments of Dunkirk, Fredonia, East Dunkirk and Brocton, Chautauqua County Emergrncy Medical Services, Silver Creek EMS, Alstar and the Dunkirk Police Department.

The narrow side street was mobbed with first responders and their vehicles, along with dozens of curious onlookers, including a reporter and a cameraman from a Buffalo TV station.
