Festival lining up for Fredonia in September

Delfeayo Marsalis will headline the Fredonia Jazz Festival on Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. at the Rotunda Grapevine Railroad Farm, 207 E. Main St., Fredonia.

Delfeayo Marsalis grew up in New Orleans with his brothers Wynton and Branford. Their father is the legendary jazz pianist Ellis Marsalis. For the Marsalis family, New Orleans jazz legacy resides at the core of their musical sensibilities. It can be said, however, that Delfeayo’s musical mind does not venture too far from home, even more so than his siblings. He celebrates the fun and joy of jazz, embraces the cultural and social blending that is its source, and delivers an intoxicating energy and drive in his performances that is familiar to the clubs and streets of New Orleans.

Delfeayo has toured internationally with jazz legends Ray Charles, Art Blakey, Max Roach, Elvin Jones and Slide Hampton, and has served as bandleader of his own groups as well. At the age of 17, Marsalis began his career as a producer and has to date produced over 120 recordings for artists such as Harry Connick Jr. and Terence Blanchard, earning him a Grammy award and several nominations.

In 2008, he formed the Uptown Jazz Orchestra, a highly entertaining ensemble that focuses on maintaining important jazz traditions such as riff playing, New Orleans polyphony and spontaneous arrangements. Delfeayo also formed the Uptown Music Theatre in 2000, a non-profit organization that empowers youth through musical theatre training. He has written sixteen musicals to date. In addition, he has composed over 90 songs that help introduce kids to jazz, and has reached over 5,000 students nationally with his “Swinging with the Cool” jazz workshops.

Delfeayo’s appearance on the festival is sponsored in part by Hodgson Russ LLP.
