New school board member returns

Michele Jackson

GOWANDA — For the third time in four meetings, the Gowanda school board welcomes a new member. Early in October, they welcomed John Waterman, then saw Michele Jackson join as a student board member later in the month, and at their last meeting, Board Member Jim Hotnich resigned due to health reasons. To replace Hotnich, the School Board welcomed a new member, but a familiar face.

Barb Weston was sworn in on Monday, during Gowanda’s rescheduled meeting. Weston previously won a Gowanda School Board seat in 2017, and was given a strong welcome back from the rest of the School Board.

“I’m excited to be back and I’m excited to see what happened,” Weston said.

The Gowanda Central School, which has been in remote learning since the beginning of last week, announced three more positive cases of COVID-19 in both the Middle-High School and Elementary School. Gowanda Superintendent Dr. Robert Anderson sent this information to the district via a letter on Monday.

“We are working with the health department and are taking all recommended steps to ensure the safety of our students and staff,” said Dr. Anderson in the letter. “We will provide further updates if additional steps are needed. Please continue to monitor your child(ren) for symptoms.”

The School Board did not provide an update on when in-person learning would return to the school.

The next meeting of the Gowanda school board will be on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
