SUNY Fredonia pauses on administrative staff posts

SUNY Fredonia has "paused" three administrative staff positions in an ongoing effort to reduce its deficit.
Stephen Kolison, the university's president, announced the action during the quarterly College Council meeting.
Council member Cynthia Ahlstrom asked Kolison what the positions were. He declined to disclose that in public, telling her he would discuss it with her in private after the meeting. Kolison did say that the university would save $672,855 by freezing the positions. The move came as part of a general restructuring of the administrative division, he said.
Speaking of the deficit, he said, "We're working to chip out at it every opportunity we have," later adding the university must "reduce the budget in such a way that it does not have a catastrophic effect on our operations."
College Council President Frank Pagano said the institution could "hit a wall" on budget cuts, because it can only slash so much before experiencing the effects Kolison warned about.
"That's why enrollment's important," Pagano said. He added, "We are looking at other things, like overtime and so on."
At the last College Council meeting in October, Kolison announced the campus has a more than $16 million structural deficit. While he anticipated most of it getting made up with federal and state aid, he said SUNY Fredonia would have to cut about $1.5 million from unspecified sources.
